Our African Odyssey

OUR AFRICAN ODYSSEY

We are undertaking this trip for personal reasons, but thought it would be an ideal opportunity to raise funds for a charity.

I-CCO   In the summer of 2004, I was privileged to spend two weeks in Zambia, assisting in a project with AIDS orphans.  This was for me an amazing time, and never to be forgotten.  We have therefore chosen to support this small charity:  I-CCO, which stands for In-Community Care for Orphans.  The charity works to provide care in the community for children who are orphaned by AIDS, supporting grandparents in the care of their extended families:  a whole generation has been depleted by AIDS.  Food, clothing and basic necessities are provided, plus schooling for sponsored children and some counselling and life-skills training.

I-CCO  works in Chiwama, a township on the outskirts of Lusaka.  I-CCO was set up and is organised by Zambians, supported by fundraisers in the UK.  In addition to the work supporting the families, there are plans to purchase some land in the vicinity, where an orphan and vulnerable children centre is to be built.  Part of the project will involve work-shops to be used to train the older orphans in skills which will enable them to find eventual employment.  We are hoping to raise funds towards the construction of these workshops.

If you would like to make a donation, please download a form.

There are other charities which we support, and hope to visit whilst we are away:

NKUNGA VILLAGE  The people of Nkunga Village in Kenya face many serious challenges to their daily survival, with low agricultural productivity, a lack of clean water and high rates of HIV/AIDS. School attendance is very low, and attainment poor.   Our church and local community have joined together to financially support this village,  in partnership with Food for the Hungry UK.

TEAR FUND  We have friends working for Tear Fund, managing their programme in Southern Sudan.  We plan to visit them, currently based in Nairobi, Kenya, and to learn more of their work.  For more information on TEAR FUND check out their website.

PAMOJA   Pamoja is Swahili for Partnership, and this UK based charity, founded by friends of ours, is working in partnership with Kenyan Christians to combat poverty.  From small beginnings, sponsoring orphans, the charity has grown and supports a large number of projects.   For further information about Pamoja, check out the website.
